IKEA PAX Assembly Cost: What You’ll Pay by Wardrobe Size

At UPTask, IKEA PAX assembly starts at $129 online for one modular frame, with $30 for each additional frame. Drawers and pull-out baskets add $5 each; other selected fittings and preparation services can change the total. These Bay Area prices were checked in September 2026. The useful measure of wardrobe size is the number of separate frames, not simply its width or number of doors.
Count frames before measuring the overall run
A frame is an individual wardrobe section with its own structural sides. Several frames placed next to each other can look like one continuous closet, but they remain separate sections for assembly pricing. Open sections count too. Removing doors from the design does not turn a three-frame system into a one-frame job.
Start with the component list from your PAX design. Count the frame entries, including repeated quantities, then record their widths, heights, and depths. Those dimensions help confirm the room and assembly method even when the price is based on frame count. Do not use a photograph alone to decide how many sections are included.
For example, a run designed with two wide frames and a similar-width run designed with three narrower frames need different frame counts. Under the listed UPTask pricing, the second layout adds one $30 frame charge. This is why a cost per linear foot is less useful here than a complete configuration list.
Estimate the base assembly price by wardrobe size
The calculation for the listed modular service is $129 + $30 × (number of frames − 1). The examples below add only the stated drawers. They exclude other selected fittings, carrying, disassembly, and any separately agreed work. They are assembly service calculations, not the purchase price of the IKEA furniture or a quote for every installation condition.

Notice that three frames with six drawers and four frames without drawers both calculate to $219. The same price can describe different work. Keep the component quantities attached to an estimate so you can check it after changing a closet layout. A revised design should be reviewed even when the overall width stays the same.

Do not estimate a multi-frame PAX installation from the starting price for a freestanding two-door wardrobe.
Add drawers, baskets, and other selected fittings
The published UPTask add-ons are $5 per drawer or pull-out basket, $10 per pull-out shoe rack, and $25 for an integrated desk or vanity. Drawers within that integrated unit still count as drawers. Standard supplied shelves and hanging rails are part of the build; list them in the project description so the layout remains clear.
A worked example makes the distinction easier to see. Take three frames, six drawers, two pull-out baskets, and one pull-out shoe rack. The listed calculation is $129 + $60 + $30 + $10 + $10, giving $239 before other selected services. If you remove two drawers from that design, the same calculation decreases by $10.
Doors still belong in the description even though the modular service uses frame-count pricing. Identify hinged or sliding doors, the relevant model, and any unusual arrangement. The service description includes fitting and adjustment for the selected model. Avoid counting the same PAX job once as a modular system and again as a separate sliding-door wardrobe.
Separate ordinary assembly from room preparation
A complete budget should distinguish building the wardrobe from getting the room ready. UPTask asks customers to select box carrying, old-wardrobe disassembly, and moving dismantled parts separately. If cartons are downstairs but the closet is upstairs, describe that before comparing prices. The same applies when an existing unit occupies the intended location.
- List the full frame and fitting quantities.
- Identify doors and share the final layout.
- Explain where the cartons are and any carrying needed.
- Identify an old wardrobe that must be dismantled or moved.
- Show baseboards, ceiling restrictions, and the intended wall.
- Confirm the complete price for the agreed work.
Wall attachment deserves its own check. UPTask states that suitable supplied anti-tip hardware can be fitted when appropriate for the wall. That is not a promise that every supplied fixing suits every surface. Share the manufacturer’s instructions and known wall conditions; resolve an unsuitable attachment method before treating the installation as a standard ready-to-build job.
A built-in appearance can also involve work outside assembly: filler panels, altered trim, painting, or a custom base. Describe those requests separately and get their scope confirmed. Do not assume a wardrobe assembly price includes changes to the room or modifications to the furniture. A drawing of the desired result is useful alongside the component list.
Compare quotes using the same finished result
A headline starting price is not a PAX quote. IKEA’s U.S. Assembly by Taskrabbit service advertises a general $52 starting price and flat pricing based on the selected items. That does not establish a $52 price for your wardrobe. Obtain the actual amount for the complete PAX configuration and compare it with the same work elsewhere.
Ask what “complete” includes: frames, interiors, doors, adjustments, required wall attachment, and agreed cleanup. IKEA’s U.S. assembly guidance, for example, excludes packaging disposal and asks for packages to be in the final room. Other providers may use different terms. These differences matter more than a small gap between advertised minimums.
If another estimate is hourly, check the number of workers, minimum charge, expected duration, and any separate fees. An hourly amount and a configuration price cannot be compared directly without those assumptions. Prepare a quote-ready PAX list
Keep one current version of the wardrobe plan. Include the frame quantities and dimensions, every interior fitting, door types, delivery status, and room photographs. Note whether the furniture is new, previously assembled, or partly built. Reassembly and correcting incomplete work should be described accurately instead of presented as an unopened new kit.
